Description

Anglo-Gallic. Aquitaine. Edward III of England (1327-1377) gold Guyennois d'Or ND (1362-1377) AU55 NGC, La Rochelle mint, 3.84gm, Fr-1. Armored Duke standing under gothic portal with sword and shield / cross fleury with lis in first and fourth quarters and leopards in second and third. An exceedingly rare and beautiful Anglo-Gallic issue, uncommon at auction particularly in lofty Almost Uncirculated grade. This short-lived type was introduced after Edward III conceded his claim to the French throne as part of the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360, instead adopting the title Lord of Aquitaine. The present piece displays clear original surfaces of rich color, sharply struck giving maximum eye appeal to the glorious Gothic imagery. The flan exhibits a light wave, clearly as-made and not disturbing the designs or strike. This piece represents the single highest graded specimen by NGC with none having been seen by PCGS; the last example of this type offered at auction was in January 2018, an XF45 graded specimen which realized $8,000 hammer, and we do not doubt that this superior specimen graded significantly higher will generate even stronger bidding.
