Description

1968 No S Roosevelt Dime, PR69 Cameo
FS-501, Famous Missing Mintmark Rarity

1968 10C No S, FS-501, PR69 Cameo PCGS. The 1968 No S Roosevelt dime proof is ranked third in Scott Schechter and Jeff Garrett's 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins. The authors describe this error as follows:

"Dimes were struck from an obverse die that lacked the S mintmark. It's easy to see how this error could have occurred. All dies are made at a single die shop in Philadelphia and then shipped to the branch mints where the dies are used in production. Coinage of this year was the first time that this missing-mintmark error could have occurred on a U.S. Proof coin because this was the first year that these coins had mintmarks!"

This is one of perhaps just two dozen examples known. It features perfectly black-and-white surfaces with tremendous Cameo contrast. An important modern rarity in essentially flawless condition. Population: 2 in 69 Cameo, 0 finer (11/22).
