Description

The Parsons-Hines 1821 N-2 Cent

1821 1C MS63 Brown NGC. MS60+ EAC. N-2, Intermediate Die State, R.1. John Wright noted the following variations of strike for this variety: "Early strikes show a diagonal graver-scratch between the first star and the date. This fades as the dentils weaken slightly and the rims begin to dish. The obverse develops minor dentil-fusing between [stars] 6-7." The example offered here is intermediate between the two stages described by Wright. The graver-scratch on the obverse has completely vanished, yet the dentilation remains full, and there is no evidence of rim crumbling. Among business strikes, this coin is tied for fifth finest known. In addition, a few proofs are known, perhaps five or six. The surfaces on both sides have a distinct olive-brown appearance. A couple dark spots are present, along with a small area of maroon patina at the second star. Save for a couple stars, all of the details are sharp. Traces of mint red remain around the devices. The reverse has a similar appearance with some dark blue toning and much more original orange luster, especially outside the wreath. The reverse is rotated a few degrees counterclockwise. This is an attractive Mint State example of a date that is elusive in all grades above VF.
