Description

1855 Double Eagle, MS62
Conditionally Rare, CAC Endorsed

1855 $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. While the 1855 Philadelphia double eagle is considered an available date from its 364,666-piece production, it is a bonafide condition rarity in Mint State grades. Both the S.S. Central America and the S.S. Republic shipwrecks yielded small numbers of this P-mint twenty, but most of those coins graded XF to the low end of the Mint State scale. This MS62 example with CAC endorsement exceeds virtually all of those coins in grade, although this coin's provenance is not disclosed on the holder. Smooth orange-gold surfaces are frosty and lustrous, showing only minor marks and no widespread abrasions. A faint halo of reddish color encircles the raised elements. The strike is sharp and eye appeal is excellent for this often overlooked grade-challenged issue. PCGS Population: 5 in 62, 4 finer. CAC: 3 in 62, 3 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268V, PCGS# 8914, Greysheet# 9791)
