Description

1846 Seated Dime, PR63
Exceedingly Rare as a Proof

1846 10C PR63 PCGS. Fortin-102, R.7. A single die pair was used to strike an unknown, albeit small, number of proof dimes in 1846, of which approximately 10 to 15 are believed to survive. Unlike in later years, this proof die pair was not retired to business strike production, with the result that proof 1846 dimes can easily be differentiated from prooflike business strikes by, among other diagnostics, the presence of noticeable die chips around virtually all of the obverse stars. Liberty's right (facing) fingers are also much better-delineated on the proof than they are on the circulation strike. This coin is a boldly struck, deeply toned example, displaying hues of olive-gold and amber-gray over each side. The fields exhibit ample reflectivity and are surprisingly well-preserved for the grade. The specialist will want to take special measures when bidding on this coin, as another example of this rare proof may not become available for a long time. Population: 4 in 63, 2 finer (7/14).
