Description

1805/4 O-102 Half Dollar, XF40
Some Luster Remains

1805/4 50C O-102, T-5, R.3, XF40 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/3. The O-101 and O-102 die marriages are the two so-called "common" 1805/4 overdate varieties, although neither is truly common. The overdate is an important Guide Book variety, and this O-102 example displays warm-gray surfaces with hints of pale blue and champagne toning. The strike is slightly weak at the centers, but both sides show only small, grade-consistent surface marks and a touch of mint luster remains. Census (all 1805/4 varieties): 17 in 40, 32 finer (5/16).
Ex: Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2013), lot 4957.
