Description

1909 Twenty Dollar, MS65+
Rare at This High Grade

1909 $20 MS65+ PCGS. The "regular date" 1909 double eagle does not have the high visibility of its overdate counterpart, but its scarcity in high grade has long been recognized by specialists in this challenging series. Roger Burdette estimates 3,500 pieces exist in all grades. What is important to recognize is the breakdown by grade for the 1909. Note the dramatic decline in availability as the grade increases: 247 PCGS-certified coins in MS64, 23 in MS65 (five of which are MS65+), and then a paltry eight pieces in MS66, three of which are 66+ (7/25). An MS65+ such as this high-end Gem example gets the collector as close to the ultimate grade as possible. This coin's satiny surfaces are bright yellow-gold throughout with reddish highlights on both sides. The strike is notably sharp with crisp definition on the Capitol dome and windows.
