Description

1862 Liberty Quarter Eagle, MS61
Elusive Issue in Mint State

1862 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint drastically reduced coinage of quarter eagles in 1862, due to the widespread hoarding that all precious-metal coinage experienced after the start of the Civil War. From a business-strike mintage of 98,508 pieces, the 1862 issue is seldom encountered in attractive Mint State condition. This sharply detailed MS61 specimen offers pleasing orange-gold surfaces that are lightly marked for the grade, with vibrant mint luster and outstanding eye appeal. Census: 34 in 61, 21 finer (8/24).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25JZ, PCGS# 7796, Greysheet# 8287)

Weight: 4.18 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
