1898 Morgan Dollar, PR66 Deep Cameo
Attractive Peripheral Toning

1898 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint produced some of the finest proof coins in the Morgan series beginning around 1895 and continuing through the 1898 issue. Renowned for high quality and reflectivity, the 1898 issue is celebrated by Miles Standish in Morgan Dollar, America's Love Affair with a Legendary Coin, who states "1898 is the clear winner when it comes to eye appeal, toning and cameo contrast. Some Proofs are so nice that their surfaces look wet."

This 1898 Deep Cameo Premium Gem proof does, indeed, meet the qualities detailed above. The strike is razor-sharp on richly frosted devices and the fields are deep and intensely reflective, which combined produce stark and stimulating contrast. Furthermore, this example is vibrantly colored around the periphery with iridescent shades of light-marmalade, ice-blue and plum. A loupe reveals a few minor hairlines that prohibit a finer grade, otherwise this extraordinary proof is pristine and makes an outstanding candidate for type collectors.(Registry values: N4719)
