Description

1857 Dime, Toned PR64
An Infrequently Seen Rarity
A Newly Discovered Proof Die Pair

1857 10C PR64 NGC. Fortin-Unlisted. This coin is from a previously undocumented proof die pair. The date position does not match F-101, and there is no die line from the rim to the R in AMERICA, a diagnostic of the only previously known proof die pair. Neither does this coin match any of the other listed Fortin varieties of the 1857 Seated dime. Diagnostics include vertical die lines in the recesses just left of the end of the pole, and a long horizontal die line through the lower part of the shield. The base of the 7 is low and centered directly over a dentil. Both sides of this near-Gem proof are reflective and sharp, and no significant contact marks are apparent. Medium-intensity russet-gold toning blankets the entire coin.

PCGS estimates 30 to 50 1857 proof dimes are known, mostly in Select and near-Gem grades. The Seated dime or proof specialist will not want to miss out on this infrequently seen rarity. Census: 11 in 64, 15 finer (4/18).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2015), lot 3486, which realized $2,820.
