Description

1912-D Nickel, MS67
Tied With Two Others for Finest

1912-D 5C MS67 NGC. The 1912-D Liberty nickel was the Denver Mint's first crack at coining the hard nickel alloy, with the result that most examples of this first branch mint issue are weakly struck on the corn ear to the left of the wreath bowknot, as well as on the obverse stars. The present Superb Gem is typical in that regard, but the outstanding surface preservation and delicate pastel toning that blankets each side in warm gold, lavender, and powder-blue hues deliver pleasing eye appeal. This piece is tied with just two others for finest at NGC, while PCGS has not seen any examples finer than MS66+ (3/15).(Registry values: N2998)
