Description

1804 BD-2 Quarter Eagle, AU55
Beautiful 14 Star Reverse Example

1804 $2 1/2 14 Stars Reverse, BD-2, R.4, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a, cracked to the right of the 4 in the date and in the left obverse field. In Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties (2006), John Dannreuther notes of this state: "the only example seen is the ANS coin, likely ex-Brock, from the J.P. Morgan donation..." In the past decade, we have handled a few other examples of this late die state, although it remains scarce compared to die state a/a.

BD-2 is the more plentiful of two die varieties for the 1804 quarter eagle, although Dannreuther estimates that its availability hovers only in the 150 to 200-coin range for all grades combined. The reverse is distinctive for its 14-star arrangement, which easily differentiates the variety from the rare BD-1 marriage. This Choice AU example displays complete border dentils and a sharp reverse. On the obverse, the left-hand stars are weak, and planchet adjustment marks appear in the same area. Still, no distracting abrasions are present.
