Description

1861 Half Dollar, MS65
High Mintage, Few High-Grade Survivors

1861 50C WB-101 MS65 PCGS. With a mintage approaching 3 million pieces, the number of Gem or finer survivors of the 1861 is notably low. The onset of the Civil War drove all coinage from circulation and into hoards and assorted hiding places. Few coins were numismatically preserved. This frosty example shows only a few small marks. Light golden-gray toning blankets the obverse -- deepening at the margins -- while rose-red and blue accents enhance the reverse. Mint luster beams through the attractive toning. Population: 22 in 65 (1 in 65+), 18 finer (6/16).
