Description

1863-S Half Eagle, AU58
Very Rare Issue

1863-S $5 AU58 PCGS. The 1863-S No Motto Liberty Head five dollar gold "is very rare in any condition" as stated by David Akers. In this near-Mint State condition, the 1863-S half eagle is extremely rare. From the original mintage of 17,000 coins, the vast majority of this issue from the San Francisco branch mint circulated extensively in commerce, with only an estimated 55 examples remaining in all grades. This superb specimen has rich orange-gold toning evenly blanketing each side. The luster is satiny, radiating over the surfaces. Abrasions are light and commensurate with the grade. Sharply struck with the Coronet Head portrait and eagle feathers displaying excellent definition. The coin has wonderful overall presentation with lovely eye appeal. PCGS Population: 5 in 58, 2 finer (9/25).
