Description
1942-D Over Horizontal D Nickel
'Rarest Jefferson Variety'
MS64 Full Steps, Condition Census
1942-D 5C D Over Horizontal D MS64 Full Steps PCGS. FS-501,
formerly FS-027, VP-001. While in midyear 1942 San Francisco and
Philadelphia switched from the traditional nickel alloy to the
unusual wartime "silver nickel" composition of copper, silver, and
manganese, the Denver Mint produced only 1942-D pieces with the
traditional mix of metals, changing over in 1943 instead. According
to the 2002 second edition of Bernard Nagengast's The Jefferson
Nickel Analyst (a wonderfully useful reference):"This variety is possibly the rarest major Jefferson Variety in uncirculated. A small number of the coins were discovered in the late 1970's and disbursed. Few have come to light since. Since the 1942D nickel is rarely seen by the roll, the variety may remain very rare unless an unusual number show up in an unsearched roll."
The first D is punched horizontally, with the curved side facing down. The present example shows no break in the steps of Monticello and displays light lilac toning. Lovely satin luster abounds on both sides. A couple of small, inoffensive marks account for the MS64 grade, but this Guide Book variety coin should nonetheless see fierce bidding competition among the hordes of Jefferson nickel specialists. This appears to be only the second time we have offered an MS64 Full Steps example of this coin. The first, in our FUN 2006 Signature auction (1/2006, lot 3113), brought $32,200. Population: 3 in 64 Full Steps, 1 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P1)
