Description

1865 Seated Half, PR66 Cameo
Dynamic Field-Device Contrast

1865 50C PR66 Cameo PCGS. The circulation-strike 1865 Seated half dollars are scarcer than their mintage of more than a half-million pieces might imply. The proofs were struck to the extent of 500 pieces; one transitional pattern is known (Judd-429, silver) with motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse, the type of 1866. This regular 1865 proof certified Premium Gem Cameo by PCGS shows dynamic contrast between thickly frosted devices and well-mirrored fields. The surfaces are mostly untoned in the centers with a rose accent at the peripheries, a highly appealing example. Population: 6 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (9/13).
