Description

Challenging 1927-S Saint-Gaudens MS62

1927-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Very well defined with pleasing yellow-gold color. The obverse of this shimmering Mint State representative shows a couple of minor cuts within the folds of Liberty's gown, but is otherwise minimally abraded for the assigned grade. More extensive contact is noted on the reverse, including a number of small abrasions at the rim.
The 1927-S was once regarded as the fourth rarest issue in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. Like so many branch mint issues in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series from this era, the 1927-S owes its rarity more to melting than to circulation. Over the past three or four decades, enough examples have been repatriated from Europe to lower the overall rarity ranking of this issue. The number of examples found in Europe, however, was significantly fewer than those for most other S-mint issues from the 1920s. Probably fewer than 100 Mint State pieces are known today, making the appearance of any Uncirculated 1927-S at public auction an important event. Population: 29 in 62, 35 finer (11/05).(Registry values: N7079)
