Though light hairlines and a few areas of slight contact are noted in the fields, the overall eye appeal of this minimally toned, exquisitely detailed beauty holds strong. Powerful mirrors supply ample contrast with the moderately frosted devices. David Bowers suggests that the Mint was overly ambitious in the second year of officially offering proofs to the public, with a mintage of 800 pieces -- of which at least 350 pieces were later melted as unsold.
