Description

1890-CC Double Eagle, MS61
Popular Carson City Gold Type Coin

1890-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Winter 1-A. Like many Carson City double eagles, an approximate 4% survival rate is normal for the 1890-CC twenties. Given the 91,209-piece mintage, the 1890-CC is a readily available issue in grades under the Select Uncirculated level. The mintage was used primarily for international trade and while a small percentage of the mintage circulated in the local economy, far fewer of those coins survive. This MS61 example is likely a repatriated coin showing minor marks and abrasions on sharply struck orange-gold surfaces. This is the more available of two die pairs showing die lapping on the right-side tail feathers and a mintmark mostly centered between TWENTY and DOLLARS. Frosty cartwheel mint luster provides significant eye appeal.(Registry values: N2998)
