1796 16 Stars Half Dollar, O-102, Fine Details
A Well-Defined Type Coin

1796 50C 16 Stars -- Corrosion, Cleaned -- NGC Details. Fine. O-102, High R.5. Any half dollar bearing the dates 1796 or 1797 draws serious attention from advanced type collectors because it is necessary to complete a type set of U.S. coinage. Even impaired pieces revealing plugs, whizzing, scratches, digs, or altered surfaces realize five-figure prices in the current market.
The Fine Details example in this lot is such a coin. While shallow corrosion pits are evident on the obverse they are confined mainly to the fields, leaving the design detail quite bold, especially Liberty's hair and facial features and the eagle's wing plumage. Indeed, perhaps the piece has claims to "Very Fine Details" Both sides are somewhat luminous from cleaning, but have since retoned gunmetal-gray with gold-champagne overtones. A few rim bumps are noted, as are light pinscratches under the right (facing) wing.
