Description

Desirable 1871-CC Dime, AU55

1871-CC 10C AU55 NGC. This extraordinary dime exhibits light gray tones over bright silver surfaces with traces of steel color. The sharp strike exhibits bold details on both sides with no indication of weakness. The fields are reflective, suggesting an early strike from fresh dies. The reverse die was reused for later years at the Carson City Mint, including all dimes from 1871 to 1874.
The mintage of this issue was 20,100 coins, and nearly all entered circulation at a time when small change was so desperately needed in the Western states. Examples are usually found in lower grades and often with heavy damage. Although this piece has some minor rim marks and other surface abrasions, it is an attractive and highly desirable representative. Census: 3 in 55, 6 finer (7/10).
