Description

1830 Dime, Brilliant PR63, JR-4
Probably Five or Fewer Proofs Known

1830 10C PR63 NGC. JR-4, R.7 as a Proof. Reportedly, between three and five 1830 proofs are known, struck only from the 1830 JR-4 and JR-6 die pairs. This brilliant Select proof features the JR-4 dies, with a needle-sharp obverse strike and glassy-mirrored fields around lightly frosted devices. The reverse is a touch less-sharp on the eagle's neck and left (facing) wing top, although all else is crisp, and the silver-white reverse is equally as reflective as the obverse. A faint golden tinge hugs the rims.

The JR-4 obverse is struck from an overdated 1829 die, although most of the overdating is polished away on the proof strikes. Slight remnants of the overdate remain at 830. Star 13 is recut, and the 0 is positioned entirely under the lowest curl. On the reverse, the second A is recut, TA is close, and the last T is low. This untoned, sparkling little jewel shows clear proof surface throughout both sides, despite a few light contact marks and some tiny dark flecks that appear only under a loupe. Census (all proof varieties): 1 in 63, 2 finer (2/20).
