Description

1859 Half Dollar, Seldom-Offered PR63
Judd-243, Pollock-299, Struck in Silver

1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-243, Pollock-299, High R.7, PR63 PCGS. The "French Liberty Head" design is attributed to Longacre, although Saul Teichman suggests Paquet may have had a hand in the design, because the obverse legend utilizes Paquet's punches for UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This richly toned example is familiar to us as the former Lemus Collection coin, which we sold in 2009, and traces back to the Massachusetts Historical Society Collection. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, it features the regular Seated half dollar reverse. The mirrored surfaces are minimally marked and sharp, with softness at the arrow fletchings, but otherwise the coin is bold and sharply detailed. Only about a half dozen examples are known. Population: 3 in 63, 1 finer (8/15).
Ex: Massachusetts Historical Society (Stack's, 3/1973), lot 342; The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 1576.
