Description

1839 Gobrecht Dollar, PR58
Highly Attractive Judd-104 Restrike

1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR58 NGC. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (head of Liberty opposite the O in OF). Late Restrike, as indicated by the patch of roughness with polish lines at the junction of the wing and tail. The late-state restrikes are believed to have been produced between 1873 and 1874. The fields are nicely mirrored, with a finish comparable to proof Seated dollars struck beginning in the late-1850s. The PR58 grade indicates some slight friction over the high points, but it will be difficult to see loss of detail there. The only signs of handling we see is "fuzziness" in the fields from a short time in the channels of commerce (or an extended stay in someone's pocket). Each side has light, lovely gray-blue toning.
Ex: Sacramento ANA Signature (Heritage, 3/2011), lot 4495, where it brought $25,300.
