Description
1885 Three Cent Nickel, Brilliant Gem
Cornerstone Date in the Series
Only 1,000 Coins Struck
1885 3CN MS65 PCGS Secure. Ex: TDP Collection. There was
little, if any commercial demand for three cent nickels in the
United States in 1885. Neil Carothers describes the circulation of
minor coins after the passage of the Specie Redemption Act in
Fractional Money:"The 3 cent copper-nickel piece was still coined, but very few were in circulation. Given a choice through unrestricted redemption the public chose the silver dime, the copper-nickel 5 cent piece, and the bronze 1 cent piece as the only coins required in transactions involving less than 25 cents."
Only 1,000 three cent nickels were struck in 1885, making this the lowest-mintage circulation strike in the series. Few examples survive so well-preserved. This Gem is fully struck, lightly toned, and semiprooflike, but not easily mistaken for a proof. Each side shows the absolute minimum number of marks for the technical assessment. Population: 16 in 65 (1 in 65+), 15 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N2998)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 275G, PCGS# 3753, Greysheet# 2786)
Weight: 1.94 grams
