Description

1890 Quarter Eagle, MS64
Original Colors, Finer Pieces Are Rare

1890 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. As 1889 saw the final production of gold dollars, the 1890 quarter eagle became the popular gift and souvenir of the day, leading to heightened saving of the issue. Even so, with a mintage of only 8,720 pieces, there are only eight pieces finer than MS64 at PCGS, not including three prooflike examples (5/25). Well-struck and only lightly abraded, this original Liberty quarter eagle displays semi-reflective fields in vibrant golden amber and frosty, lustrous devices. Colorful contrast yields a dynamic cartwheel effect that flashes vibrant hues of orange and lilac. The stars and LIBERTY are all minutely die doubled. The die scratch in the mid-right side of the shield is present in all examples.(Registry values: P2)
