Description

1867 Shield Nickel, PR62
Sought-After Rays Variant

1867 5C Rays PR62 NGC. Dannreuther-3. A small mintage of approximately 25 proof Shield nickels with Rays on the reverse was struck in the early part of 1867, before the Rays were eliminated from the design later in the year. The elusive nature of this issue became obvious to numismatists at an early date and a few restrikes were produced to satisfy collector demand, but the 1867 Rays nickel remains the sought-after key to the proof series today.

The present coin is an impressive PR62 example with sharply detailed design elements and reflective fields under shades of greenish-gold, lavender, and blue toning. The surfaces are lightly marked and eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 1 in 62, 16 finer (6/16).
