Near-Gem 1874-S Trade Dollar
Lustrous and Mostly Brilliant

1874-S T$1 MS64 NGC. This near-Gem 1874-S Trade dollar is a remarkable example, not only for its excellent technical grade, but for its aesthetic appeal as well. It is seldom that a Trade dollar is found with prooflike surfaces and cameo contrast, but this is such a coin. Both sides are fully lustrous and mostly brilliant, accentuated by light gold toning near the borders. Nearly all design features are boldly struck, with slight weakness noted only at Liberty's head and the eagle's left (facing) claw. The devices are frosty with satiny fields, creating a marked cameo appearance. Census: 18 in 64, 2 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N2998)
