Description

1815/2 Half Dollar, VF25
O-101, Uncracked Reverse

1815/2 50C O-101, R.2, VF25 ANACS. A mostly effaced 2 remains visible beneath the 5 in the date, the legacy of a repurposed 1812 die used to strike 47,150 half dollars in 1815. The British threat from the War of 1812 had eased, but both silver and serviceable dies were in short supply at the Mint. This VF25 example is a pleasing "circulation cameo" with light silver-gray toning on the raised devices surrounded by battleship-gray fields. Marks and abrasions are muted by the moderate circulation, yet solid definition remains on the motifs.
