Description

1850-O Half Dollar, MS65
Important Condition Rarity

1850-O 50C WB-101, Die Pair 3, R.3, MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1850-O is a difficult acquisition in Mint State, where Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (1993) assign the date a low R.5. PCGS has certified fewer than 60 Mint State examples, mainly through near-Gem. Gems are very rare and finer examples are nearly unobtainable.

The grayish-purple surfaces of this MS65 coin are blushed with cobalt-blue patination overlying strong luster. An exacting strike imparts bold definition to the design elements, and close inspection of the well-preserved surfaces reveals no significant marks. Die rust is visible on parts of Liberty's portrait, not unusual for a New Orleans issue. Excellent overall eye appeal. Population: 4 in 65, 2 finer. CAC: 3 in 65, 2 finer (5/16).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 3237.
