Description

1844 Half Dime, Toned PR64
Rarely Offered in Proof Format

1844 H10C PR64 NGC. In 1844, the Mint did not record proof coin mintages. Moreover, proofs were not actively marketed to the public, so pieces that were struck were low in number. Today, PCGS estimates that only 10 to 15 proof 1844 half dimes survive in all grades. The combined NGC and PCGS certified population totals list 13 grading events (4/18), although some duplication may be reflected in that number. This Choice example is the first 1844 proof that we have handled since the Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part II (Heritage, 10/2014), where a PR64 NGC CAC coin realized nearly $13,000.

This piece displays a sharp strike and reflective fields. Golden-toned interiors cede to deeper blue and violet border toning, producing strong eye appeal. A colorfully appealing example of this rare proof issue. Census: 3 in 64, 2 finer (4/18).
