Description

1885 Half Dollar, MS66
White-on-Black Cameo Contrast

1885 50C WB-101 MS66 PCGS. CAC. A Premium Gem circulation strike, struck from fresh dies with fully prooflike mirroring in the fields. The design elements are bold, and there are no bothersome abrasions. Neither side shows mentionable toning. The 1885 Seated half dollar boasts a small mintage of 5,200 pieces. Half dollar coinage during this period was in token quantities only, as most of the Mint's silver bullion and other resources were being absorbed by Morgan dollar production under the dictates of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. Nonetheless, half dollars struck in 1885 did not circulate to a meaningful extent, as many pieces were retained by collectors and dealers because of the issue's low mintage. This cameo-contrasted Premium Gem has been carefully preserved for more than a century. Population: 5 in 66, 3 finer. CAC: 2 in 66, 1 finer (5/16).
