Description

1920-S Cent, MS65 Red
A Major Registry Set Rarity

1920-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. From a mintage of more than 46 million pieces, fewer than 200 1920-S cents are known to survive with full red luster. The bulk of these reside in MS64 Red, and it is probably that at least a few resubmissions are reflected in that figure. PCGS has graded 14 Gem Red coins and none finer, and NGC lists 10 pieces in this grade and none finer (6/17). We have previously handled only two MS65 Red PCGS coins within the last decade. The first was in lot 174 of our December 2008 Houston Signature sale, which realized $34,500; the most recent was in lot 3063 of our July 2013 Summer FUN Signature sale, which realized more than $44,000. The present example shows luminous tan-gold surfaces with a faint woodgrain pattern in the luster. Slight incompleteness of Lincoln's beard is the only strike weakness seen, and there are no carbon spots. A very eye-appealing coin within the Condition Census.(Registry values: N4719)
