1908-D No Motto Twenty, MS66
Among the Finest Certified

1908-D $20 No Motto MS66 PCGS. Type Two, Long Rays. In early 1908, the Mint slightly modified the obverse design of the double eagle, making the rays a trifle longer. This Long Rays subtype comprises the majority of the No Motto D-mint double eagles known. According to research by Roger Burdette, these pieces were likely struck during a short period between the second week of April and May 12th, 1908, when the final No Motto coins were delivered by the coiner at Denver.

As a date, the 1908-D No Motto double eagle is plentiful through MS64, scarce in MS65, and rare finer. This Premium Gem is among the finest examples known. The strike is sharp, and vibrant satin luster displays warm orange-gold patina. The few small abrasions that determine the grade are restricted to the high points of the devices. On this piece, the mintmark is tilted sharply counterclockwise. Population: 16 in 66 (2 in 66+), 0 finer (11/22).
