Description

1858 Seated Dollar, PR55
Popular Proof-Only Date

1858 $1 PR55 PCGS. OC-P1. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. There are no reliable Mint records for the number of proofs struck in 1858, other than the fact that it is a proof-only year and that no business strikes exist. Most estimates suggest around 300 proofs were made from two die marriages. A die lump on the L of DOL. confirms the reverse die employed on this example was used to strike proofs in 1856 and 1857, as well as a few of the rare Restrike proofs dated 1851 and 1852. The PR55 grade suggests the coin either circulated briefly or was mishandled. Although the pale-gold surfaces are busy with light abrasions, there no heavy marks. A full strike remains in evidence with glimpses of the original mirrored proof fields. Population: 5 in 55, 92 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N1)
