Description

1867 Seated Dollar, MS64
Largely Prooflike, Conditionally Scarce

1867 $1 OC-1, R.2, MS64 NGC. A Top-30 Variety. Osburn-Cushing Die State b/b. Struck from polished dies, the obverse shows light die clashing beneath Liberty's elbow and repunching on the date. Dick Osburn suggests the initial date punch was intended for quarters, then partially effaced and struck with the much larger punch used on dollars. Both the obverse and reverse fields of this near-Gem example are flashy and reflective -- free of all but a few scattered, tiny marks and some faint hairlines intermingled with the die polish lines. Grayish-blue rims and gold toning at the dentils surround brilliant silver fields. Both the obverse and the reverse display sharply struck motifs that retain smooth mint frost for significant contrast. Census: 8 in 64, 3 finer (4/25).(Registry values: N4719)
