Description
1834 Classic Head Quarter Eagle, MS64 ★
Attractive High-Grade Type Coin
1834 $2 1/2 Small Head MS64 ★ NGC. Breen-6138, Variety 1,
R.1. The William Kneass Classic Head design replaced John
Reich's Capped Bust portrait during the 1834 mintage year, although
the new design incorporated elements of a previous Reich design
used on the Classic Head large cents of 1808 - 1814. A reduction in
the gold composition and a slightly smaller diameter for the issue
allowed the new design to circulate effectively based on the June
28, 1834 Act providing lower weights for gold coins, aided by a
mintage of 112,234 pieces that was extremely large by quarter eagle
standards. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM was omitted with the redesign
of the reverse. This example displays mostly prooflike fields and sharply struck motifs. The large arrowheads crowd CA of AMERICA to confirm the variety. Attractive medium-gold surfaces flash a greenish glint across the lustrous, minimally marked surfaces. The star centers and eagle's plumage are well-defined, with fully struck horizontal and vertical shield lines on the reverse -- a pleasing example of the type for suitable for any high-grade set. Census (all varieties): 45 in 64 (7 in 64 ★ ), 17 finer (5/16).(Registry values: P1)
