Description

1864 Three Dollar, PR53
Just 50 Proofs Struck

1864 $3 PR53 NGC. The rarity of business strikes (just 2,630 pieces struck) contributes to demand for the few proofs that exist -- even though only 50 proofs were made and far fewer than that number survive. This pleasing, yellow-gold proof apparently had a stint in commerce and likely was confused with a business strike at one time. Proof strikes are confirmed by the date positioned slightly left without the repunching shown on those coins struck for circulation. The fields are cloudy with small marks and mirrored only in protected areas as witness to the brief circulation. Census: 2 in 53, 16 finer (6/16).(Registry values: N2998)
