Description

1861-S Ten Dollar, Original XF40
Ex: Eliasberg

1861-S $10 XF40 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. The "scratch" mentioned in the Eliasberg catalog is visible horizontally in the right obverse field, but that is the only distraction on this otherwise appealing XF example. The smooth olive-gold surfaces are completely original, as evidenced by softly luminous recesses that are reminiscent of subtle mint luster. The 1861-S ten had a mintage of 15,500 pieces, few of which survive in any grade. This is an appealing, collector-grade example. Population: 9 in 40, 40 finer (7/19).
Ex: John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1982), lot 715; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2015), lot 4295.(Registry values: N2998)
