Description

1888 Half Dollar, MS67
Low Mintage, Rich Border Toning

1888 50C WB-101 MS67 CACG. The 1888 was the tenth consecutive low-mintage half dollar issue, since the Philadelphia Mint was obligated to strike many millions of Morgan dollars to coin silver purchased via the Bland-Allison act. The 1888 half dollar has a mintage of 12,001 pieces, excluding proofs. Philadelphia dealers set aside examples, and the issue is almost as available in Mint State as in circulated grades. But Superb Gems are rare, and none are certified by either NGC or PCGS as MS68 or finer (12/25). The present lot is a gorgeous coin featuring dynamic cartwheel luster and splendid forest-green and tan-brown border toning. Marks are essentially absent. The strike shows incompleteness on the upper stars and IN GOD, likely due to slightly out-of-parallel dies.
