Description

1797 16 Stars Dime, JR-1, MS62
Light and Lovely Toning
Condition Census Example

1797 10C 16 Stars, JR-1, R.4, MS62 PCGS. Both the JR-1 16 Stars obverse and the JR-2 13 Stars obverse share a common reverse and together they constitute the only two known die pairings for the 1797 dimes. Featuring a pointed 9 in the date (the JR-2 has a knobbed 9), the JR-1 is also known for the severe die break running from just below the bust through 17 in the date and beyond star 1.

Steel-gray device high points contrast nicely against the intermingled blue and gold in the fields on each side, with generous reflectivity and top-notch eye appeal. A few thin marks appear under a loupe, running through the neck and upper bust of Liberty. The strike is generally better on the right side of the obverse and the left side of the reverse. This piece is tied at the low end of the Condition Census for the variety. PCGS reports three submissions of the JR-2 in MS62 with four finer (5/16).
