1903 $5 PR66 PCGS. From a relatively large mintage of 154 pieces, the 1903 proof Liberty half eagle is one of the more available issues of the series. Granted, the term "available" does not really apply to any proof gold issue from the late 19th or early 20th centuries, as all those issues are rare in absolute terms. Probably about half of the reported mintage has survived in all grades, with some specimens in impaired condition and several coins impounded in institutional collections.

Like most 1903 proof half eagles, this attractive Premium Gem exhibits an all-brilliant finish with little cameo contrast. The date is positioned left of center and some minuscule die lumps are evident near the earlobe. The design elements are razor-sharp throughout and the fields are deeply reflective. Well-preserved yellow-gold surfaces show a few highlights of green, with wonderful eye appeal. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (5/16).
