Description

1854-S Double Eagle, A Lustrous Near-Gem Example

1854-S $20 MS64 NGC. Like virtually every higher grade 1854-S, this example shows fine, matte-like surfaces from exposure to seawater. These come from the S.S. Yankee Blade, from whose shipwreck approximately 100 coins with Uncirculated details and matte surfaces were uncovered. The amount of granularity on these differs from piece to piece. Some are seen with very heavily etched surfaces while others have a more natural appearance. This coin is certainly among those in the latter group. Few people realize how rare the 1854-S Double Eagle is with original surfaces and in high grade. In fact, the PCGS-graded MS61 Bass III: 781 coin, which sold for $10,925, is the only non-seawater Uncirculated 1854-S that we are aware of.
The striking details on this piece are complete throughout and there are virtually no abrasions. Most of the mint frost is still intact over the fine-grain surfaces and each side has the rich reddish patina that is always seen on this issue.
