Description

1860-O Ten Dollar, MS62
Condition Census Rarity

1860-O $10 MS62 NGC. Variety 2. Here is a sought-after branch mint issue. The 1860-O ten dollar gold piece was the final issue of this denomination from the New Orleans Mint prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, which quickly shut down operations at the Louisiana facility. Continuing a trend of low-mintage gold issues throughout the late 1850s, the 1860-O eagle had a production of only 11,100 pieces, most of which experienced wide circulation. Mint State examples are extremely rare and almost all are heavily abraded. This MS62 coin, with its semiprooflike fields, sharp design elements, and rich yellow-gold luster is undeniably high in the Condition Census. Only light handling marks on the cheek and in the nearby field determine the grade. In all Mint State grades, NGC has seen only seven submissions, including two in MS62 and one MS63 coin finer; PCGS has seen four Uncirculated submissions, with a single MS62 coin as finest (6/16).(Registry values: P6)
