Description

1867-S Ten Dollar, AU55
Condition Census Quality

1867-S $10 AU55 NGC. With a mintage of only 9,000 coins, the 1867-S Liberty eagle is understandably rare. No Mint State examples are known, and circulated coins survive to the extent of 35 pieces at NGC and 34 at PCGS, including possible resubmissions. As few as 50 examples may actually exist in all grades. This issue continued a trend of low-mintage dates for the denomination that began prior to the Civil War and would continue until 1879. The present coin is among an elite few that show any amount of original mint luster -- seen here in the protected regions of the peripheral fields. Each side is lightly abraded with original olive-gold patina. The strike is bold, and little wear is present. Finer coins are prohibitively rare. Census: 3 in 55, 3 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N4719)
