Description

1896-S Half Dollar, MS65
From the Pryor Collection

1896-S 50C MS65 PCGS Secure. Ex: Shireman/Pryor. When James Bennett Pryor purchased this coin half a century ago, the 1896-S was considered one of the top rarities in the series. The Kentucky collector purchased half a dozen Barber half dollars at a St. Louis coin show the day he acquired this piece, and they were the first Barber half dollar purchases for his set. It is always wise to start with the most important issues.

This brilliant Gem is an exceedingly important Barber half dollar with a low PCGS population. Mint State examples are elusive, and especially so in MS65 or finer grades. Virtually as made, this example has brilliant silver luster with pristine satin surfaces and only a trace of delicate champagne toning. PCGS has graded 10 examples in MS65, four in MS66, and one in MS67 (11/15). While there are rarer issues in the Barber half dollar series, the 1896-S will pose a significant challenge to the advanced collector.
Ex: Larry Whitlow (11/13/1965); James Bennett Pryor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 1/1996), lot 268.
