Description

1893 10C PR65 NGC. Breen mentions a proof 1893/2 dime in his 1988 Encyclopedia, writing "only a tiny minority of proofs" and "proofs are far rarer than business strikes [of the overdate]." The present Gem is obviously the variety that Breen refers to, as it shows recutting within the loop of the 3 and has a different date position that most proof 1893 dimes. The 3 nearly touches the bust. The 1893/2 proof is listed in the Guide Book but is not recognized by NGC or PCGS and is absent from the Cherrypickers' Guide. This is a well struck Gem with light peripheral golden toning.(Registry values: N1793)
