Description
1799 Bust Dollar, MS61
B-8 BB-165, 7x6 Stars Variant
1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-8, BB-165, R.3, MS61 NGC. Ex: Durango
Collection. Die State II. The inner ray of star 10 is doubled, and
the N of UNITED repunched over an inverted N. The N of UNITED was
first punched in upside-down, or the I was punched too close as an
extra serif shows on the lower right of the N. The reverse die
shows light clash marks near OF from Liberty's drapery, and a light
die crack shows through star seven into LIB of LIBERTY. Attractive
steel-gray and golden patina shows over each side and is accented
with mottled russet color near the base of the obverse. A
substantial amount of spotty russet-blue toning has accumulated on
the reverse. The peripheral details are sharp and well-defined.
Some weakness is noted above the eagle's head and on Liberty's
hair. The underlying fields exhibit bright, satiny luster. Bust
dollar enthusiasts will pay close attention to this important
offering.Ex: Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 5300.
