1799 Dollar, Exceptional AU58
7x6 Stars, Scarce B-21, BB-169

1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-21, BB-169, R.3, AU58 PCGS. Ex: Hesselgesser-Miller. Bowers Die State V. Struck from rusted dies. Extensively cracked obverse nearing its terminal state, the sole use of the die. Essentially full mint luster beams from both sides of this near-Mint coin, beneath iridescent toning featuring grayish-blue and fawn-gold hues. A hint of rub on Liberty's temple curls and the eagle's breast provide little distraction from the sharply struck elements.

BB-169 is rare in Uncirculated condition. The Bowers Encyclopedia lists only three Mint State coins -- an MS62 and a pair of MS60s. Along with three other AU58 examples, this coin joins the Condition Census for the variety. The surfaces are just about devoid of marks, making the attractive toning the most reliable pedigree marker for future reference. The present example is the Bowers plate coin for the variety.
