Choice XF 1854-O Three Dollar
Lapped Reverse Die
1854-O $3 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2. Moderate wear, a weak strike
through the centers of each side, and the usually seen lapped state
of the reverse die all conspire to dampen some of the details on
this Choice XF 1854-O three dollar. The unlapped reverse is far
scarcer. Portions of the 85 in the date are weak, as are parts of
LA in DOLLAR, above, and the top of the bowknot, below. Each side
shows deep brownish-gold patina near the rims, on the obverse
complemented by lilac high points. There are few marks for the
grade. The 1854-O three dollar issue is perennially popular as the
only O-mint of the series, and this example still shows much
